about

moon landing is inspired by the little known story of the Navajo women who wove the integrated circuits and the Raytheon women who wove the memory cores which enabled the successful Apollo 11 Space mission and subsequent 1969 moon landing. Scored for strings to echo the strings on a loom with the musicians paired to reflect the use of binary code in weaving - 2 Violins, 2 Cellos and 2 Harps - this piece is part of a duo-work created in collaboration with textile artist Margo Selby who has woven a stunning 16 metre textile installation in response. For the premiere, the musicians were seated in the stamp stairwell at Somerset House beneath Margo's immersive installation which danced and cast shadows across the score as Helen conducted, moving gently in the breeze as it blew in from the Thames. This recording was captured at the live premiere on 28 February 2024.
